Training - Workshops
We customize workshops for teacher in-service to help classroom educators make the most of their best personal secretary – FileMaker Pro. All workshop participants receive a set of open source, extensible* database solutions which include:
AH, the Assignment Handler for teachers to organize & distribute homework electronically.
Teachers enter assignments in a table with fields that catalog the details such as topic, source (textbooks, etc.), chapter, pages, and other information.. These assignments are then allocated to classes, recording date due & other particulars. By turning on Instant Web Publishing, students (& parents) are able to view their current assignments from a web browser. In other words, FileMaker creates a dynamic web page of student assignments that instantly changes whenever the database is updated by the teacher.
Recall, a teachers' memory supplement.
Until the day we can add memory chips to our brains, this is the next best memory upgrade for the classroom educator — a searchable database of web sites, books, and other curricular resources as well as classroom photographs. This becomes a personal tool for each individual teacher, their own password protected record of everyone and everything they wish to be able to recall with simple queries.
VIP, the Very Important Portfolio for students.
A student's best work at any point in time should never be forgotten. Perhaps a piece of art in first grade became the milestone that led to a career in design. Perhaps the 4th grade book report that made it to the class bulliten board was was a student's first triumph as a competent writer. Every student should take their personal copy of VIP with them from year to year as they accumulate the academic achievements that made them better scholars; their VIP will store formatted documents, photographs, graphics, and any other kind of digital file.
Our workshops use these software solutions or those a school system already owns to empower teachers with tools that they can use immediately. Beginning workshops learn to add records, edit, search, and print reports; in other words, become competent FileMaker Pro users. Higher level workshops learn to create layouts, extend these solutions, or create new ones to help with teacher productivity and accountability.
* Open source = you get the full access password which allows you to see the innerworkings of the application and perhaps more importantly, allows you or others to make changes or additions to the underlying structure; it is therefore extensible since additonal features can be added and the solution can grow to meet changing needs.
